Discovery Friction

Discovery Friction is the negative impact on the consumer shopping experience caused by category ambiguity on retail shelves. It occurs when loyal or high-intent customers cannot reliably locate a product because its physical placement varies wildly between different retail chains or even different store formats within the same chain.

Relationship to Category Haze

Discovery friction is the direct consumer consequence of category-haze. Because functional adult-soft-drinks might be placed in the liquor aisle, the wellness cooler, or a dedicated “sober” endcap, shoppers experience cognitive load and frustration when trying to find them.

Strategic Mitigation

To combat discovery friction, beverage brands must over-invest in omnichannel marketing and retail-media-networks to digitally guide consumers to the exact physical location of the product in a specific store. It also relates closely to the broader discovery-gap, where online awareness fails to translate into local, physical purchases due to merchandising inconsistencies.
