In response to changing consumer behaviors—specifically the fact that a large portion of younger demographics are moderating their drinking—Diageo Australia has pivoted its marketing strategy. The brand is moving away from a sole reliance on massive, tentpole macro-sponsorships (like major sports leagues) and is instead targeting cultural “micro-moments.”

To capture Gen Z and Millennials and compete for share-of-occasion, Diageo integrates its brands into highly curated, niche social occasions such as run clubs, album listening parties, and “cosy game nights.” This approach attempts to own the psychological occasion before the consumer enters the retailer’s digital or physical ecosystem.
