European Commission (EC)
The European Commission (EC) is the executive body of the European Union responsible for developing primary beverage regulations and terminology standards across member states.
The EC strictly protects traditional alcohol categories from dilution by the growing NoLo market. For example, under EU Regulation 2021/2117, the EC standardized the terminology for non-alcoholic wine, mandating the use of the term “dealcoholised” to accurately reflect the dealcoholization manufacturing process. The EC also works in tandem with the european-food-safety-authority-efsa to regulate novel foods and functional ingredients.
